Market Focus Vietnam

  • Tuesday 02 March 2021 08:00-09:30
  • Online
  • Organisation : CCIG and SVBG, in partnership with the Embassy of Vietnam in Switzerland and Schifferli & Associés

Located in Southeast Asia and bordering China to the south with a coastline of 3260 km, Vietnam has been over the last two decades an important production base and famous tourist destination in the Asia-Pacific region.

Recent geopolitical and commercial competitions have exposed Vietnam as a preferred location for the world production chain adjustments since the 100-million inhabitant economy has enjoyed domestic political stability and free trade treatments from all major economies in the world.

During the tumultuous year plagued by the Covid-19 pandemic, Vietnam has emerged as a bright star as it has successfully controlled the spread of the deadly Coronavirus and is manufacturing a significant volume of personal protective equipment (PPE) for the world. Vietnam is among the very few countries registering a year-on-year positive GDP growth of 2.91%, with exports increasing by 6.5% in 2020.

Switzerland and Vietnam have enjoyed a friendly and harmonious relationship over half a century. This year, the two countries are celebrating 50 years of bilateral relations. Swiss companies such as Nestlé, Roche, ABB, Holcim, Schindler were among the first to set foot in Vietnam when the country opened up its economy in the 1990s. Today, more than one hundred Swiss companies are operating in Vietnam, taking advantage of the country’s huge natural resources, an abundant workforce, and a large and young population with increasing purchasing power and consumption demands.

Switzerland – as a member of the European Free Trade Area (EFTA) – has been in negotiation with Vietnam for a far-reaching FTA since 2012. The two sides are aiming at reactivating the negotiation process as soon as possible in order for Swiss companies to enjoy similar rights and benefits as their EU peers under the provisions of the EU-Vietnam agreements, which entered into force last year.

This webinar will bring in the voice of representatives from Vietnamese authorities and key business sectors serving as market entry references for foreign investors.
